NEW DATA ON THE PRE-ROMAN SETTLEMENT OF CANTAMENTO DE LA PEPINA (FREGENAL DE LA SIERRA, BADAJOZ): TOPOGRAPHIC RESTITUTION OF THE DEFENSIVE SYSTEM AND A CHRONOLOGICAL APPROACH

Abstract

Resumen:

La combinación de datos LiDAR y prospección arqueológica de superficie nos han permitido delimitar con precisión la planta de la muralla que rodeaba el poblado prerromano de Cantamento de la Pepina y situar correctamente las torres/bastiones existentes. Gracias a esta delimitación, se han podido estudiar las zonas vulnerables del trazado defensivo y definir con mayor precisión la superficie del castro. Asimismo, los materiales documentados en superficie han permitido afinar más la cronología del sitio, el cual pudo extender su ocupación
hasta época romano-republicana.

Abstract:

The combination of LiDAR data and archaeological survey has allowed us to precisely delineate the plan of the wall that surrounded the pre-Roman settlement of Cantamento de la Pepina and correctly locate the existing towers/bastions. Thanks to this delimitation, it has been possible to study the vulnerable areas of the defensive layout and define more precisely the area of the hillfort. Also, the surface materials documented have allowed to further adjust the site chronology, which could extend its occupation until Roman-Republican times.
